| Soil Information: KESWICK SERIES - The Keswick series consists of very deep, somewhat poorly drained soils formed in 25 to 50 centimeters of loess or loamy sediments and in the underlying paleosol weathered from glacial till. These soils are on convex summits of interfluves, convex side slopes, shoulders of side slopes on till plains. Slope ranges from 5 to 25 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 11 degrees C. Mean annual precipitation is about 840 millimeters. USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are pastured or forested. Some areas are cultivated. The principal crops are corn, oats, and meadow. The native vegetation is deciduous trees.
CALWOODS SERIES - The Calwoods series consists of very deep, somewhat poorly drained, very slowly permeable soils formed in loess or loess and pedisediment or glacial till. These soils are on broad summits and have slopes of 1 to 5 percent. Mean annual temperature is 53 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is 38 inches. USE AND VEGETATION: Some areas are used to grow corn and soybeans. Other uses are pasture and woodland. Native vegetation is hardwood forest
HATTON SERIES - The Hatton series consists of very deep, moderately well drained, very slowly permeable soils that formed in loess and silty pedisediments that are underlain by weathered glacial till. These soils are on narrow rounded ridgetops and have slopes of 2 to 9 percent. Mean annual temperature is 55 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is 38 inches. USE AND VEGETATION: Most of these soils are forested or are used for pasture. The areas that are cultivated are cropped to corn and small grains. Some are used for hay. Native vegetation is dominantly white oak forest.
BELKNAP SERIES - The Belknap series consists of very deep, somewhat poorly drained soils formed in acid, silty alluvium on flood plains. Permeability is moderate or moderately slow. Slopes range from 0 to 4 percent, but are dominantly 2 percent or less. Mean annual precipitation is about 43 inches and mean annual temperature is about 56 degrees F. USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are cultivated. Corn and soybeans are the principal crops. Native vegetation is hardwood trees.
